Peter Cheney

Peter was one of two Co-Presidents of Mars, Incorporated. Mars, Incorporated is a large, privately held, global consumer products company which, among other products, manufactures confectionery, pet food, and food products.

Born in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Great Britain and, after reading Biochemistry and Bacteriology at University in the UK, he spent three years in the pharmaceutical industry researching the biosynthesis of penicillin. Peter joined the United Kingdom petcare business of Mars in 1972. He spent several years working in long-term Research and Product Development before moving into the Manufacturing side of the business. Over the following years, he held a number of different roles within Europe in both R&D and Manufacturing. In 1990 he moved to the USA and became part of the Mars Corporate Staff based in McLean, VA with responsibility for Technology in the Western Hemisphere. In the subsequent years Peter has been responsible for the manufacturing function of Masterfoods USA, has been President of Kal Kan/Uncle Ben’s, and the Regional President for the Mars Inc. Food and Petcare business in the Americas. His last four years with Mars were spent as one of two Co-Presidents with full global responsibility for the Corporations strategic plans and operational performance.

Peter is passionate about science, the application of technology and the environment. He has worked with several major organizations on the welfare of animals in our society. In addition, he has served on the Boards of a number of different companies and on the Board of the Petfood Institute, The Grocery Manufacturers of America, The Advisory Board of Duke Childrens Hospital and, for four years, on the Board of Trustees of Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. He currently serves on the Board of Horsepower Technologies™, Bartells Drug Stores, Hannah’s (a pet services company) and, in addition is either an Advisor or Director of a number of smaller start-up companies in the North West and on the East Coast. He is a member of The Institute of Directors.

He remains closely involved with The University of Leeds in the UK where he recently endowed an international Fellowship program and is one of six Founder Members of the University’s Court of Benefactors. He serves on the University’s Campaign Fund Board and, is a Director on the North American Foundation for the University of Leeds.

He is married to Susan, a retired dentist and avid horsewoman. They have seven horses, a cat and, when not traveling around the world, divides his time between his homes in California and Washington state. He enjoys playing golf and has a long-standing interest in aviation and space travel.
